Around Mission Book Project

I:
The Book
What had been the Around Mission
book project is now, as
of April 2007, an actual 128-page hardcover book,
with dustjacket. Apart
from a brief two-page introduction and a few pages dedicated to
copyright data and to the names of the project’s generous supporters,
the book consists entirely of colour photographs, 153 in all, mostly one
to a page in 6” x 9” format, occasionally two or four to a page.
The book’s subject matter ranges quite widely, from
landscapes and cityscapes and skyscapes, on the one hand, to close-up
looks at old vehicles and boats and roadside shrines and vernacular art
on the other. Because bodies of water are such a prominent feature of
this part of the Fraser Valley, Stave Lake and the Fraser River are also
strongly represented, and the human presence is everywhere—either
literally, as when people are caught unawares at festivals or sporting
events, or indirectly, in the way people express themselves in what they
make or where they live.
What gives the book its geographical coherence is the
fact that all the pictures were taken (during the past ten or twelve
years) within a ten or fifteen mile radius of downtown Mission, B.C. The
book thus attempts to capture the flavour of a town and a region, while
at the same time perhaps suggesting something universal about how we all
go about our lives.
A small sampling of the book’s images can be found on
this website’s
Around Mission
gallery.
